The Computer and Information Sciences Dept. at Southern Maine Community College is a subscriber to the Microsoft Imagine  and the VMware Academic (VMAP) programs.

As a subscriber to the Azure Dev Tools for Education and VMAP programs, students in the CIS Dept. are able to obtain certain Microsoft and VMware products for free.  Each program has unique license agreements for the software products.

Microsoft Office 365 is now available for free for all SMCC students.  Follow the link below and use your MySMCC login credentials to logon.

The CIS Dept. faculty also recommend Open Office, a free open source office suite that supports the file types used by Microsoft Office.

  1.  Any student who is taking a Computer and Information Sciences course (CMIT, INSC, CSCI) is eligible for the Microsoft Imagine program. 
    You do not need to be matriculated in a Dept. program and all part time students are eligible.

  2. Your username on the CIS Depts.  Microsoft Imagine website is the same as your student email address.
    For example, if your name is Ima True Geek, your student email address, and your Microsoft Imagine username, would be:

  3. Registering a new account after receiving the new account email...

    As a new student in a CIS Dept. Program or course, your MS Imagine account will be created at the beginning of the semester.  As a result of your new account being created, you will receive an email from the CIS Dept's. MS Imagine web site.

    The email will look like this in your inbox:

  4. What do you do if you don't receive the new account email?
  5. When you open the email...

    You will see a link inviting you to complete your account registration as shown here.

  6. Follow the link to open the MS Imagine web site.

  7. Complete the form to register your account.

  8. Once you have registered your account you will see a confirmation screen, and you will be logged in.

  9. What to do if you didn't receive the email about your account...

    If you didn't receive the email as described in step #3, and can't find it in your "spam" or "junk" folder.  You will need to use this registration process.
  10. Follow the link to the SMCC CIS Dept. MS Imagine web site at the top of this page (link) where you will see this page .

  11. Click the "register" link on the upper right side of the web page, which will take you to the page shown below.  Where you will be able to register / activate the MS Imagine account that was created for you.

  12. Enter your username, which is your SMCC email, and then click continue.  You will then see a message that a confirmation email has been sent to your inbox.

    If you do not enter your username correctly, misspell it, or if you do not exist as a user on the website you will receive an error.  In that case you should contact the Microsoft Imagine program administrator (contact link).

  13. In your email inbox you will see an email from the MS Imagine program, shown below.

  14. Open the email and click through the link in the middle of the message to complete your account registration.

  15. Back at the MS Imagine web site, complete your registration by entering the required information.

  16. After entering the required information, click register, and you will be logged in to the "web store".

  17. Once you login to the web site using your SMCC student email address, and the password you created when you registered in the previous step, you will be able to obtain Microsoft  operating system software and applications
  18. Most of the software available is available for download as a .ISO file.  Some software can purchased directly from the website with a credit card. 

    A .ISO file can be:
    • Burned to a CD or DVD using CD/DVD burning software, or the Windows 10 built in .ISO burner.
      • Right click the .ISO file and choose Burn disc image (shown in the image below)
    • Mounted as a volume (drive letter) in Windows 10.
      • Right click the .ISO file and choose Mount (shown in the image below)

    • Extracted written to a UFD (USB flash drive) using a third party tool, for example:
    • Mount the .ISO file as a virtual CD / DVD in the settings for a VM (virtual machine) in order to perform a clean, bare metal installation of a Windows OS in a VM.

  20. If you forget or lose your password for the Microsoft Imagine website:

    • Go to the Microsoft Imagine website.

    • Click on the Sign In link  on the top right corner of the page.

    • On the sign in window click the "Forgot Your Password" link.

    • Enter your username.

    • The website will then email you your password.

    • If you do not enter your username correctly, misspell it, or if you do not exist as a user on the website you will receive an error.  In that case you should contact the Microsoft Imagine program administrator (contact link).

  22. The software available from the Microsoft Imagine program is restricted to products made by Microsoft and includes many of the current Windows client and server operating system versions.

    Many server packages, e.g. SQL Server and Sharepoint, can also be obtained from the site.  Software applications available include: Access and Visual Studio.

    Microsoft Office is not available from the Microsoft Imagine program.  A Microsoft Office 365 subscription can be obtained directly through the College by logging in with your College account on the MySMCC web site, and clicking on the Office 365 menu link.

  23. Almost all of the software on the Microsoft Imagine web site can be downloaded for free. If you were to purchase the CDs or DVDs from the website, the cost of the software prices vary for each package.  This software may only be purchased with a credit card and will be shipped directly to you.

  24. Each student may only "purchase" only one copy of each of the software packages.  All of the current software packages and operating systems require activation and follow the Windows Product Activation requirements.

  25. If you lose or forget your product key for software that you have obtained via the Microsoft Imagine web site, log in to the web site and click the Your Account link at the top of the page.  You will then see a list of software that you have ordered from Microsoft Imagine.  Each software title will have a link in it that will show you the CD key.

  26. After you graduate, or stop taking CIS Dept. courses, you may keep all of the software that you have obtained from Microsoft Imagine.  Of course you will have completely read the EULA that you are presented with when you download any of the software packages... nudge, nudge, wink, wink...

  27. If you are not matriculated as a student in one of the CIS Dept. degree programs at SMCC, your Microsoft Imagine account will expire at the end of the semester in which you are taking CIS Dept.  courses.

    If you are a CIS Dept. student, your account will expire at the end of the spring semester, as long as you are an active student, and will be reinstated in the fall semester if you return to SMCC as a CIS Dept. student.
