CMTP 230, Senior Internship

Information for internship providers:

All students matriculated in the SMCC Computer Technology A.A.S degree program must complete the CMTP 230, Senior Internship class as a requirement for graduation.

Before a student can register for the internship class, they must have completed a minimum of 30 credit hours in the Computer Technology A.A.S. degree program.

The pre-requisites for the internship class include courses in operating system installation, maintenance and support; databases and programming; microcomputer hardware, and networking.

In order to obtain a qualified internship experience, Computer Technology students are required to complete a minimum of 135 hours experience in the Information Technology Dept. at a sponsoring organization.

Frequently asked questions from sponsoring organizations:

  1. What does my company or organization have to do to get a computer technology intern

  2. What type of knowledge will the student intern have?

  3. Do we, as an internship provider, have to pay our interns?

  4. What type of work ethic should we expect from an intern?

  1. A company, institution, or non-profit organization who wishes to sponsor a computer technology student intern from SMCC should send an email to Professor Howard Burpee, Department Chair of the Computer Technology program at SMCC.

The email should include a description of the internship position in the form of a "help-wanted" advertisement.

The email should also include contact information and any other requirements necessary for the student intern to be able to apply for the student intern position.

The information regarding the internship opportunity will then be forwarded to students in the CT department.

By disseminating these internship "job" opportunities to our students, we expect they will gain valuable experience in creating resumes, cover letters, and job interview skills.

  2. The curriculum for the Computer Technology A.A.S. degree at SMCC includes an internship course requirement (see syllabus here).  The pre-requisites for this course are that the student have completed 30 credits, or two semesters, towards the Computer Technology degree.

The first and second semester course schedule can be viewed here.

If you, as an internship provider wish to obtain a student who has taken more courses in the program, please include that requirement as part of the internship "job" description.

Although a CT student may not have completed the first two semesters of the CT degree program, you may, as an internship provider, find such students applying for your internship opportunity.  These students are often among the more motivated and experienced, and the department supports these students even though the hours they work as an intern will not apply to the CMTP 230, Senior Internship course requirements.

  3. There is no requirement that a student intern be paid by the sponsoring organization.  Internship positions are split almost 50/50 between paid and unpaid positions.

    back to FAQ's

  4. SMCC Computer Technology students run the full gamut... from the older, more mature, non-traditional type of student with lots of work experience, to the younger (18 - 19 year old) traditional student with little work experience.

Many times we have heard from internship providers that our students did not dress properly, or exhibit other job skills.

The CT dept. hopes that, along with the technical experience a student intern will gain from the internship, an internship provider will help educate our students in  proper dress, proper behavior, and other social job skills.

Whether an intern is in paid or unpaid position, the student intern should be expected to conform to all requirements as if they were a full time employee.
