In order to succeed in this course, each student should expect to spend a minimum of six hours per week in the open labs,
or in a virtual machine environment, practicing the class exercises.
Note: reading assignments will be assigned from some of the references

Installation media for
Windows 10 Pro, Windows Server 2012, and Windows Server 2016
Microsoft Imagine versions of Windows 10, and Server 2016 are suitable for classroom use. The
evaluation version of Server 2012 should be
used in the classroom. Link to recommended downloads page.
Recommended Course Materials:

Prerequisites: CMIT 100, CMIT 105, CMIT 140
This course covers the installation, configuration, and maintenance of Microsoft Windows. The operating systems utilized in this course include various current versions of Microsoft Windows operating systems.
Other topics covered in this course shall include Windows desktop deployment, Windows desktop restrictions, Active Directory installation, group policies, and networking in peer to peer and client server environments.
The class time for this course is a combination of lecture and hands-on practice.
After successfully completing the course, the student will be able to:
- Install and configure various current versions of Microsoft Windows.
- Use Windows to install, configure, and manage all aspects of different hardware components contained within the system unit.
- Create and utilize automated
deployments of Windows operating systems.
- Manage system
policies and user profiles.
- Install and configure Windows as a component of a peer to peer and a client / server network.
- Utilize critical thinking skills when dealing with
- Identify basic components of an end-user IT system.
- Carry out trouble-shooting strategies for resolving an identified
end-user IT problem.
- Carry out basic computer network troubleshooting techniques.
- Differentiate among various computer networking models.
- Use communication, negotiation, and collaboration skills as a member
of a diverse team.
- Use documentation or a knowledge base to resolve a technical
challenge in an identified computing scenario.
- Produce technical documentation responsive to an identified

Regular and prompt attendance is required. Excessive lateness and absences will affect the final course grade.
- More than six absences throughout the semester = -10 points
Five or more consecutive absences throughout the semester = Academic Failure
- Two lates = 1 absence
- If for any reason a student is absent from a class, it is the responsibility of the student to obtain the lecture notes from another student and to immediately schedule with the instructor a makeup time for any missed in-class assignments.
- All assignments that are submitted or completed after the scheduled time and date shall receive a five point (5%) grade reduction for each day they are late.
Only business days count for this penalty, therefore an assignment must be
made up within four weeks of the due date to receive any credit at all for
- The only exception to the above late submission policy is that tests
must be made up before the second class period after the test date
(within one week), but are still subject to the five points per day late
- There is no such thing as an excused absence. In extraordinary circumstances, as in cases of valid and urgent medical or personal emergency, a modification of this policy, at the discretion of the instructor, may be possible.
- If a student is able to identify, in advance, a particular day that they shall be unable to attend a class, and if the student emails the instructor at least one week in advance of the day they shall be absent, a modification of this will take effect.
Classroom and Computer Use Policies:
- All students are expected to be familiar with the IT Dept. classroom policies and SMCC policies as
published in the SMCC Student Handbook and posted
- Students, when sending an email to the instructor, must use an email client that displays their real name in the “From” field. All emails to the instructor that are related to this course
should be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org
Computer monitors at the workstations must be turned off during the
lecture portion of the class.
Please remember to put your cell phone in silent / vibrate mode during
the lecture portion of the class. Regardless of whether or not you
remember to to silence your phone, cell phones must never be
used for any purpose during any lectures or task / lab assignments.
Exceptions will be made for students who must remain available for
emergency purposes after the professor is notified of the situation.
The use of a laptop, netbook, or tablet as a note taking device is permitted during lectures, according to the following parameters:
- The device shall only be used for note taking.
- Network connectivity to the device will be disabled

follow these classroom and computer usage policies may result in a grade
