In order to succeed in this course, each student should expect to spend a minimum of six hours per week in the open labs practicing the class exercises.

Textbook: None required

Recommended textbook: MCSE/MCSA Guide to Installing and Managing Microsoft Windows XP Professional and Windows Server 2003, Course Technology, Ted Simpson, Dan DiNicolo, James Michael Stewart, Ed Tittel

Materials: Bootable media with basic utilities and network client software, a Windows Vista Business operating system installation DVD, a Windows PE boot CD, and a bootable CD, DVD, or USB device that will load a GUI based operating system.

Prerequisites: CMPT 100; Recomended prerequisite = CMPT 215

Course Description:

This course is an introduction to network operating systems with an emphasis on the management of network objects, e.g. users, groups, volumes, print servers, and other shared network resources.
Other topics to be covered in this course shall include login scripts, group policies, physical and logical network topologies, network media, and network distribution devices.
The operating systems utilized in this course include various current versions of Microsoft Windows server and client operating systems.
The class time is a combination of lecture and hands-on practice.

Course Objectives:

As a result of this course the student shall be able to:

  1. Install and configure a standard 10 / 100baseT / TX Ethernet local area network that uses a combination of star and bus topologies, with hubs and / or switches, and category 5e twisted pair media.

  2. Install, configure and utilize common network protocols.

  3. Install, configure and utilize various network client operating systems on IBM compatible microcomputers and configure them to connect to various types of client / server network operating systems.

  4. Create users and groups with specific rights to volumes, files, printers and other network objects.

  5. Create, implement, and troubleshoot network login scripts.

  6. Install and utilize the Group Policy Management Console to implement group policies.

  7. Harden Windows servers by implementing security settings.

  8. Manage print servers and create network print queues.

  9. Configure the client system and server so as to make it simple and convenient for the end user to access the network resources.

  10. Utilize critical thinking skills when dealing with technology issues.

  11. Use all appropriate terminology when using verbal or written communication with other information technology professionals.

  12. Create complete and thorough documentation regarding processes and procedures utilized in the information technology field.

Grading Policy:

  • Tasks and Lab Assignments = 40 points
  • Exams = 20 points
  • Homework = 10 points
  • Written Assignments = 10 points
  • Other Assignments = 10 points
  • Presentation = 10 points

Attendance Policy:

Regular and prompt attendance is required. Excessive lateness and absences will affect the final course grade.

  • More than three absences throughout the semester = -10 points
  • Three or more consecutive absences throughout the semester = Academic Failure
  • More than four absences throughout the semester = Academic Failure
  • Two lates = 1 absence
  • If a student is more than ten minutes late for class the student shall not be allowed in the classroom until the break period.

Makeup Policy:

  • If for any reason a student is absent from a class, it is the responsibility of the student to obtain any lecture notes from another student and to immediately schedule with the instructor a makeup time for any missed in-class assignments.
  • All assignments, tasks and tests that are submitted or completed after the scheduled time and date shall receive a five point (5%) grade reduction for each day that they are late.
  • Quizzes must be made up before the next class period after the quiz date.
  • Although, as stated by this policy, there are no excused absences, in unusual cases, or in cases of documented, valid, and urgent medical or personal emergency, the discretion of the instructor will apply.
  • If a student is able to identify a particular day that they shall be unable to attend a class, and if the student emails the instructor at least one week in advance of the day they shall be absent, a modification of this makeup policy may be possible.

Classroom and Computer Use Policies:

  • All students are expected to be familiar with the CT Dept. classroom policies and SMCC policies as described at: http://ctech.smccme.edu/Policies.html
  • Students, when sending an email to the instructor, must use an email client that displays their real name in the “From” field. All emails to the instructor that are related to this course must be sent to burpee@smccME.edu.
  • Computer monitors, on the desktop workstations or individual student laptops, must be turned off during the lecture portion of the class.  Failure to do so will result in a grade penalty.
