The securing of network services, network devices, and network traffic can be a full time job. In this course the student shall build on their existing knowledge of operating systems, hardware and network systems management as the student acquires the specific skills to implement basic security services on any type of computer network. This course is a combination of lecture and hands-on exercises based upon the Security + Certification, and will emphasize network security issues in Microsoft Windows products. As a result of this course the student shall be able to: Identify common network and operating system security threats.Harden internal operating system systems and services.- Create enhanced Windows security policies.
Install, configure and utilize various network security auditing tools.Install, configure and utilize various network security enhancement tools.Create and manage secure web servers with Windows IIS utilizing Windows certificate server.Implement security on WLAN’s.Install and configure hardware VPN devices and software VPN services.Create an organizational security policy.Utilize critical thinking skills when dealing with technology issues.Use all appropriate terminology when communicating orally, or in writing, with other information technology personnel.Create complete and thorough documentation regarding processes and procedures utilized in the information technology field.
- Tasks and Lab Assignments = 40 points
- Exams = 20 points
- Homework = 10 points
- Written Assignments = 10 points
- Security Policy Assignment = 10 points
- Presentation = 10 points
Attendance Policy: Regular and prompt attendance is required. Excessive lateness and absences will affect the final course grade. - More than three absences throughout the semester = -10 points
- Three or more consecutive absences throughout the semester = Academic Failure
- More than four absences throughout the semester = Academic Failure
- Two lates = 1 absence
- If a student is more than ten minutes late for class the student shall not be allowed in the classroom until the break period.
Makeup Policy: - If for any reason a student is absent from a class, it is the responsibility of the student to obtain any lecture notes from another student and to immediately schedule with the instructor a makeup time for any missed in-class assignments.
- All assignments, tasks and tests that are submitted or completed after the scheduled time and date shall receive a five point (5%) grade reduction for each day that they are late.
- Quizzes must be made up before the next class period after the quiz date.
- Although, as stated by this policy, there are no excused absences, in unusual cases, or in cases of documented, valid, and urgent medical or personal emergency, the discretion of the instructor will apply.
- If a student is able to identify a particular day that they shall be unable to attend a class, and if the student emails the instructor at least one week in advance of the day they shall be absent, a modification of this makeup policy may be possible.

- Students, when sending an email to the instructor, must use an email client that displays their real name in the “From” field. All emails to the instructor that are related to this course must be sent to burpee@smccME.edu.
- Computer monitors, on the desktop workstations or individual student laptops, must be turned off during the lecture portion of the class. Failure to do so will result in a grade penalty.
